Hudson River Rivalry

The storied past of the NHL’s Metropolitan Division includes matchups between the New Jersey Devils and the New York Rangers spanning nearly 50 years and more than 270 total games. With the Rangers’ home rink, Madison Square Garden, just across the Hudson River from the Prudential Center, these “cross-river rivals” share a fierce history.

The 2024-25 NHL season featured four matchups between these heated rivals. On December 2, the Devils defeated the Rangers in a 5-1 victory at MSG. In similar fashion, the Devils shut out the Rangers 5-0 on December 23 in a home win. The Rangers traveled to the Prudential Center on December 23, winning in overtime 3-2 against the Devils. The Devils hosted the Rangers again on April 5, winning in a 4-0 shutout to wrap up the season series with a 3-1 record over New York.

New York and New Jersey play three times during the 2025-26 season, with all games in March. The Devils host the Rangers in Newark on March 7. The teams finish their regular season series with two games in the Big Apple on March 18 and 31.
